About Jered

Jered Yalung, PharmD, is a licensed geriatric pharmacist with over seven years of long-term care pharmacy experience. After seeing too many medication-related hospitalizations that could have been prevented, he owns and operations Options Home care—the only pharmacist-owned home care agency in North Carolina.

Today, Jered helps families across the Greensboro and Burlington area navigate senior care with confidence through medication safety guidance, care transition support, and pharmacist-informed home care services. He writes about medication safety, home care best practices, and practical guidance for families managing senior care.

Why I Do This Work

I went to Virginia Commonwealth University for my undergraduate degree in Chemistry & Biochemistry and a Doctor of Pharmacy degree. I started my career in long-term care pharmacy where we handled medications for skilled nursing homes and assisted living communities.

For seven years, I worked in that world. I processed thousands of prescriptions every day. I learned how medications work differently in older adults, how they interact, and what happens when dosing goes wrong.

But here’s what bothered me: I rarely knew the people I was serving. I’d see their names on labels, their medication lists, their diagnoses but I didn’t know them. One day, a colleague said we should just approve a medications for someone on 40+ medications without questioning the amount. It wasn’t malicious. It was just… routine.

That moment stuck with me. These weren’t just prescription numbers. They were people—someone’s parent, grandparent, spouse. And they deserved better than a system that treated them like data points.

From Pharmacy to Home Care

In 2020, I started with Options Home care in Burlington, North Carolina. I wanted to build something different—a home care agency where medication safety wasn’t an afterthought.

We’re not just another home care agency. We’re the only pharmacist-owned agency in North Carolina. That means:

  • Our caregivers are trained to recognize medication-related warning signs others miss
  • I’m personally available to review medication lists and coordinate with healthcare providers
  • We catch problems before they become hospitalizations
  • Families get both compassionate caregiving AND clinical oversight

We serve families across the Triad region, providing everything from a few hours of companionship per week to 24/7 live-in care.
